there's an "attach file" option when you post no? See attatchment. (I presume its the same 'cos mods have it for all forums and larger max size i think)

if you used x-capture, just point the "browse" at the file. if you used Print Screen, paste (ctrl+V) into whatever graphics program you prefer then save as a file (jpg) and rest is same.

Ok, specs:

Winamp skin is called simplicity.
msstyle skin is a covertion made from a litestep team to msstyle, unauthorized convertion, that's why u can't find the theme in any bigger desktop customization page - i got it via underworld :D - , the icons are called Indream and i used iconphile to manually change my icons and i think that's all.
Btw i'm using msstyles without having to install stylexp because i have used a nice patch on xp to make that possible.

Free: the patch i used that enables u to use stylexp themes without having stylexp installed and iconphile.

On my Amiga (last year) I used to have the excellent `glow icons` by Matt Chaput (who works for Silicon Graphics)... amazing. I`d love to somehow convert them to pc.

when you open the zip file it comes in you should be able to open the file inside and that will load it in desktopX and save in its folder automatically.

Tried that and it looks really clunky, compared to that proggie you told us about, Aston. Now, that is a great programme! After mucking around with it, I produced this. You can't see it but it also has a sidebar that fits perfectly in with the theme. Thank M8!

Ditto for me, tried DesktopX and others but they all got a major chunk of of my mem and crashed with the slightest adjustments =/

Been using Aston Shell for 2 weeks now and so far no crashes and no noticable decrease in performance.

Aston has been fine for me apart from Medieval Total War not working with it. You'd see the taskbar flashing in and out and then crash about 10mins l8r :mad:

BL seeing as u seem to know abit about litestep.....i managed to customise the right-click popup window but i couldn't work how to adjust the width of it, many of the shortcut names are cut in half. Any ideas?

I'm just wondering if ppl just go out and apply some windows blinds / object desktop skin or shell just for the threads or stick with it permenantly ?

I can safely say I don't because it dosen't alter my productivity having a new shell / gui. It's really just all the same with different astetics.

I think MS did a deent job with their GUI. I do occasionally change my theme but I often find myself reverting back to 'windows classic' theme and with no background :o . Only just a sea of blue :)

Also lets remember that some of the user interfaces out there are complete bollox. Like that blue orb, it looks great but you can't really navigate for shit.

Also I find that having all these nicce shit going on in the background eats up resources, I don't notice it doing it but it's always nice to have the whole thing as streamline as possible.

I like to change theme its fun, but I will always go backt to defualt windows. None of the other themes are good enough =)

I've been using Astonshell for a while now and it doesn't use up any resources or cause any problems atall. The only thing is you can't save stuff to the desktop, only the desktop folder which is a pain in the arse but it's still much better than the bog standard windows look.

Besides, anything that takes away the microsoft look of things is ok in my book....

I've been experimenting with Windows Blinds over the past few days, but decided against it as I like it plain and simple (and couldn't find where to enter the serial ;) )

So I've jazzed my desktop up with a great little utility, that will overlay system stats onto the desktop in real time :cool:

It's fully customizable, can have Fan speeds, other temp monitors, network stats etc..

Been fiddling with the setup of CoolMon (http://www.arsware.org/coolmon/download/) and have now added CPU Speed, Bus Speed & Live Weather Updates (oh & a nice babe :D )




If You've not tried this program, why not ?

It's the best util I've seen in ages, freeware, fully customizable & you can run vb & java scripts (via scheduled batch file) to get all the extra info you require (such as the current weather, current processor/bus speed, WinAmp tune currently being played, Emails waitings to be read etc..). The website has plenty of downloadable vbs & java scripts to choose from.

I've set my bat file to run every 5mins. The other info such as Memory, Pagefile, LAN, CPU Temps etc.. is all live to your desktop).

The format of how the info is displayed it down to you but is a sort of hibryd vB code as used on this site....very easy to get to grips with :cool:

Been fiddling with the setup of CoolMon (http://www.arsware.org/coolmon/download/) and have now added CPU Speed, Bus Speed & Live Weather Updates (oh & a nice babe :D )

I think it looks really cheap and nasty. Theres quite a few shells that do that for you, but make the effort of putting it into a some nice looking monitors/icons. Id link them, but im currently sweeping thru hordes of wallpaper and skin site atm, and id just get lost.

winamp comes in a few different windows, basically have ur windows maximised, equaliser + main window + playlist.

then u just click the button inbetween minimise and maximise , its named "toggle windowshade mode" (i think) and line each of the windows up next to each other, side by side.:)

OK I've had Aston for a couple of days now. Tonight I noticed my internet had slowed RIGHT down, it was like being back with a 56k modem (I have ADSL). I looked at everything I could and even got to the point of phoning my ISP! Before I did that, I thought I'll swap shells back to standard XP. Bingo back to normal! So, guys Aston is out for me.

Now, next dumb question, I guess the only thing I don't like about XP, is that stupid taskbar. Is there any proggie that will just change that and not chew up my resources?

Updated my CoolMon desktop thing now to show me fan speeds and also if I have any waiting emails on any of my email accounts.....I tell you it's damn good ;)



Screenshot is taken just after I picked up my emails & rebooted, hence the zero mails and low total network traffic. The totals for waiting emails update as othen as I run the bat file...every 10mins at mo

btw to get live CPU temps & Fan Speeds you need mother board monitor (also freeware) installed, but it doesn't have to be running.

On the coolmon site go to the extensions bit and download the weather js extension and read its info. You will need to go to the weather site to find out the short code of your City.

Transparant windows suck, eat processing power and are usefull.

It's called Coolmon and is available for free from here (http://www.arsware.org/coolmon/download/)

To get the temps you need do also install Motherboard Monitor (but don't need it running...just setup to look for right temp sensors)....then as the std config's for how you want the info layed out on screen are crap, you have to sort a decent cfg file for it (the display setup is very like vB code used here)

U would also need extensions (on website) to gather info such as emails waiting, weather etc...

All in All its very flexible as to the amount/type of information you can display overlayed on your desktop

its not a mirc skin - I have a style assigned to XP - this style has reskinned the way windows look and hence makes mirc look different

I also change the colours and fonts so they look different
