Allright then, I've downloaded some movies off KaZaA (The Matrix and Full Metal Jacket to be precise) in .avi form, but when I play them, WMP seems to think they're audio files... it just plays the sound and shows those stoopid pattern things (in fact with FMJ it doesn't even play the sound). Quicktime gives me the wonderfully useful "You need some software but we don't know where or what it is" message. Anybody know where to get the right codec or whatever to play these files?

get divx player (http://www.divx.com/divx/) and install that. It should add some codecs that wmp can use. The install also comes with its own player

You'll wanting this (http://www.divx.com/divx/) then :D

I hate Divx myself and can't see whats wrong with mpg, but if it's long and ends in .avi then these days this is what you need.

btw - After the software/codecs are installed you can reassociate .avi files with WMP.

If the divx avi is incomplete then use this util to recompile the index's divfix (http://www.alientech.it/download/dvd.htm#DivXFix)

u download divx5.02 yet... it comes with playa which should play it fine... WMP may not play the visual but the sound is still there, even with the codec installed... personally I use zoom player and it plays divx5 movies fine (downloadable at www.download.com)

if that still doesnt work try downloading this nimo codec pack (http://www.btinternet.com/~nimosiro/). It has a few extra 'wierd' codecs included that arnt in the divx pack. Theres even some audio ones in there.

Just download, install somewhere and just leave them to it. If you need them they will be there, if not, so what! :)

Q: for u DivX'o'philes - WHY ?

Isn't mpeg better, as while its starts downloading you can do a quick copy & paste of the first 2mb's or so of the file and play it to see if the quality is any good. With Divx u have to copy/paste then use that divfix thing.

Also, why does it not allow me to use the play progress slidder bar to move to a specific point in the film (this sort of works but not as accurate as mgg) ?

I DL'd and installed the nimo pak now and while I think it has made it easier to go to certain points in a film using the slider tool its too early to say for sure as I only have 1 divx film (I normally dl the mpg versions)

Off to dl something in divx now :D

Thanks - I had the same .avi problem as kiki and after searching the Winamp community forum boards for a solution to this .avi problem - (loads of requests for help there on this but no answers that made any sense) - the divx codec answer given here instantly made my .avi movies work.

Now Quicktime has hijacked media files which used to open in Windows Media Player. Is there any easy way of fixing this so WMP is the main player?

www.doom9.net has loads of info if you ever need to find out stuff about codecs

from the download section grab a copy of Gspot 2.0

this will tell you what audio / video codecs a file uses and whether or not you have them installed, useful when you are having problems,

Download the "Nimo 5. build 8" from Kazaa install the basic pack, then if your still having probs look for the "Angelpotion" codecs, these two together can play most films that are out there.

Thx DaveGOD - got that done and most saved media files automatically open in WMP.... it was just links for media taken direct from the web which were opening in Quicktime but a new years resolution means I won't be going to those links again. ;)

Checked out that Nimo 5 build 8 codec info - you can also get Nimo 5 build 8 info and download from
here (http://www.softnews.ro/public/cat/11/2/2/11-2-2-12.shtml). Seems to cover alot but I ain't downloaded it yet.

Also didn't go for the Angelpotion cause did a quick check and found this http://jhepple.com/codecs/angelpotion.htm

AngelPotion Definitive MPEG-4

AngelPotion is a hacked version of the Microsoft MPEG-4 V3 codec. The .APL file of this codec includes a packed version of the Microsoft MPEG-4 codec. The AngelPotion DLL manages call between the Microsoft codec and the application. The big problem is that the DLL sometimes modifies the format of the video stream before passing it to the packed Microsoft codec. The impact of this bug can be that Windows Media Player's automatic codec download breaks and that some programs that use DirectX won't be able to decode or play AVI files properly. Because video formats pass through most if not all of the installed codecs during the process of format negotiation, AngelPotion can destroy any video format in any application which can crash your OS.

The AngelPotion format can be decoded with any other version of Microsoft MPEG-4 V3 by changing the two instances of AP41 in the AVI header to the FOURCC of another MPEG-4 V3 codec.

Because this hack is dangerously unstable we suggest that you remove this codec from your computer if you have it installed.
