View Full Version : What should I buy with £200 - Suggestions welcome

My situation is this....I've just received a large wad in the post (curtosey of my bike accident last year), and while I think I'll try the novel approach (for me  ) of sticking most of it in the bank for now, I do feel the NEED to spend £150-250 of it on some sort of toy/plaything....but what ?

Possible options on my mind incl

1) Nintendo GG + MarioSunshine + 16MB memory + extra controller from PC World for £178...saw this last night and hovered...and hovered...and hovered....then left :(

2) an X-Box, but it wouldn't it look a bit ugly next to my new 32" TV & DVD :p

3) Upgrade my GF2MX200 to something a little spicier, but wouldn't want to spend more than £120 on such an addon - I'm quite happy with my current usual 60-85fps, 800x600 res. in wolf and don't play any other games so this might be a waste, but am open to persausion (btw my sys is XP1500+, 512MB DDR, Gigabyte GA7DX m/b)

4) Steering Damper for my Fireblade like this (http://www.kernal.co.uk/images/others/sprint.jpg) or this (http://www.kernal.co.uk/images/others/scotts.jpg)

I need more ideas or a push in the right direction

If I had the money, I'd get a GC over an X-box, but then at the moment I want a new phone so I'd spend it on a Sony Ericsson T300

Good for you:thumbs:

Had a bike accident last Friday (blonde in a golf:rolleyes: ) so rubbing my hands with financial glee.

Anyway, buy a GC, I bought one a few weeks ago and its Suuuuperb.

You want :-

Rogue leader
Resident Evil
Mario Sunshine

Got em all, they're all great.

The only reason i'd buy an X-box would be Halo, but I built my PC for FPS's anyway.

Dont think you'll need a new GFX card till Doom3 etc.

And finally, if you got a blade and want a steering damper, its time to chop it in for a Deuville anyway:jester:

I'd get an XBox. I luv me GameCube but just don't play it much these days :( ... mainly cause I play Halo constantly.

Then again there is Zelda and Metroid on the GC...... tough decision matey.

Don't buy any consoles. IF you were to buy one go for gamecube... The great xbox games just come out for PC anyway.

Buy some surround speakers I dunno. IMO the location for gaming is PC.

If I had the money I would want to upgrade to a GF5 or Radion 9300 :)

Why not get a DC, at least their games are super budget now and better gfx than n64 too !

Why don't you get a ZX spectrum ?

I had an N64 when they first came out (£300 :( ) and played Mario 64 then Goldeneye to death. Just not sure if I've still got the console bug or not.

Indicidently, my N64, then a cheap 2nd hand DC saved me a fortune in upgrading my PC over the years as I didn't feel the need to upgrade it to play the lastest PC games. Then I spotted the rtcw demo and the console soon started to gather dust while my PC welcomed new found gfx, cpu, memory type friends and went from a lowly PII300Mhz/TNT2 to what it is today.

Keep em comming.....the GC is in the lead by nose, but games like Resident Evil & Rogue Leader don't tempt me.

Mario Sunshine :) YES
Smash Bros :) Maybe
A decent GC car sim / rally sim (ala Colin McRae / Metropolis SR) would be nice

Any other future classics in the pipeline ?

You could not spend the money any better than going and buying yourself a geforce 4 TI 4600, and getting Unreal tornament 2003. why would anyone want a games console over a pc?, its a little bit more than you wanna spend but its well worth it.

Dont you hate being picked off by those slags on the bunker roof as your running up the beach, well this card can turn you into one of those slags, like ME

Whenever you get a bit of dough, always put it into your pc, thats my advise anyway

I thought the XBox would be a bit crap, especially as I already had a PC. I got a Game Cube and was pretty happy (Monkey Ball :)!!!)

I was amazed when I picked up my XBox - out of all the next gen consoles it's the only one that really feels 'next gen'. If u like FPS i'd get one m8 :) (Don't wait for Halo on the PC - Halo with a mouse and keyboard will suck ass)

..cause they like to play good games as opposed to pretty, crap ones IMO :D and they have 'real' friends ( says me posting on a friday evening :( )

Halo with m+k will suck ass??? this game was first being developed for PC until M$ decided to put their money where their mouth is and bought Bungie... M$ doesn't have the knowledge to hire any talent so they gotta go buy it... I guess it's how business works... :)

I'd go GC... I've tried the XBox and almost all the games out for it, all are boring except for Halo and Rally Sport... the games coming out look pretty good but most are expected to appear on PC... I've tried a few on GC and I find games have more quality... some may not look as good graphically as XBox but with Nintendo it's all about gameplay and fun...

don't know how much a GF4 will cost u but that could be an option... errr since u got a GF2MX, maybe u can squeeze a GF3Ti200 along with ur GC... I don't know what prices are like in the UK... but that way any game coming out for PC will run smoothly with ur computer and u'll still have a GC...

Bollocks to everything before this post.

Get ya self a cheap ticket to amsterdam approx £40.

you then got £160 left to spend on getting a couple of fit looking whores and giving them what daddy ordered for about an hour until they chuck you out.

Well worth it IMO.

Almost everyone I know is yelping about how great PCs are not consoles.

lol....I have this in mind (sort off)

Spent a couple of hours in Amsterdam in June (on our way back from Nurburgring on the bikes). Only had a couple of hours there before going for the ferry so just had time to take in the sights and get a flavour of whats on offer

Didn't do anything other than :googly: I will however return soon, but almost certainly with the GF in tow. She's as keen to see the sights herself and will be happy to watch a live show or 3 just so long as there's no touchy, touchy :bigcry: (I will dip in to the other funds when the time is right on this one)

why would anyone want a games console over a pc?

a) Save cash on upgrades eg upgrading my PC to run Doom3 smoothly will cost at least £200...chances are in the next year, thats the only game I will want to try.....£200+£35 = lots of dough to play one game <----BTW I'm sticking with rtcw as the only game I play on a PC.

b) Consoles R more socialable - Works two ways really. My gf thinks I'm unsocialable (with her) playing online over the net, but if I had a console plugged into the TV, add a 2nd controller + a mario game and she'd be :love2:

Come on ...... it's loads of hastle transporting pc's around. Even when u do get a decent LAN set up it's not nearly as sociable as a few mates around a TV (and Wolfy's the only good PC game IMO :P)

Yeah, I just come back from Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago after a weekend away with the missus and a couple of friends.

We took in a couple of shows. there was this one dude who had the chance to fuck this fit bird on stage but he could'nt get it up, but the crowd was quite noisy so i gave him the benefit of the doubt and let him off being gay this once.

Went to the night time show over the road and this same dude is still trying to fuck the same chick, guess what? no boner. I could'nt let him off this time as the crowd was pleasant and quiet. He is gay.

I'm 32 ffs.....I sold my bmx 17yrs ago and while it was fun while I had it, I don't think I'd look very  on one these days.

Wouldn't mind an off-road (road legal) motocross bike for green laning during the winter (but this would be more like £3000 :( )

My Bro has a PS2 that he bought 1 1/2yrs ago and only has 3 games (f1 2001, something & something else). I've never even asked to borrow it off him, even though I know he rarely plays it....just doesn't appeal to me. He bought the PS2 mainly cos he's a Sony nut.....all his Audio/Visual kit (TV, Satellite, Video, Stack Hifi, Minidisc player, bedside alarm, CD Players in both his and his gf's Audi's are ALL sony

Personally, I never really rated the PS2 (& never rated the PS)....they're all hype with no real uniqueness to the games over what a decent PC can do. That's why I went the N64 & DC route as Sega & Nintendo can produce games that you wouldn't see a PS or PC (at least until sega went s/w only)

Also had a GBAdvance, that I bought in an airport last year while delayed for 5hrs......really only bought it for Mario Kart nostalgia from my Univ/SNES days.....sold it after 3 months.

Already got a Power Commander III :D

For those not into bikes, its a little black box gizmo that sits inline between the ECU and the injectors. You plug in a laptop or pc (via serial port) and can reprogram how much fuel the injectors are given for any given thottle positions/engine revs via its software in other words its a bit like a superchip for a car, but fully programmable. Maps suitable for differnet states of tune (eg Race Exhausts, free-flow aifilters) can be downloaded via the net or I could spend £100-£150 having a dynojet centre build me a custom map for my bike......not going to bother though cos one of the maps on the CD does the job just fine.

Standard manufacterers fueling settings on ECU's (cars & bikes)are not normally perfect as they have to compromise the tune of the engine to pass emission/noise regulations - this often means a bit of a flat spot around 3-5000rpm (on a bike) & less than perfect throttle response. More info here (http://www.powercommander.com/104-111.shtml)

Went and looked at GC & XBox today but am still torn between the two & my PC.

The X-Box's games and potential abilities look better than the GC's...but it's virtually a PC (you can now run Linux on it ffs)

Meanwhile with the GC and Mario Sunshine, while nice looking is maybe a bit too cutsey for me these days but that water cannon thing seems to be used a lot in the game and I'm sure it would drive mad with repetitiveness in the same way that Luigi's hoover put me right off Luigi's Mansion :hammer:

tbh....I don't think I'll get either which takes me to what I might do tomorrow

There's a Computer Fair/Market near me on Sunday, might pop along and look at the goodies on show (need a m/b chipset replacement fan anyway), but will probably be drawn towards the GeForce cards on offer.

Are these cards in the correct order of performance

OK playing devils advocate here.

Why not buy a Game Boy Advance + one of these (http://www.goblindirect.com/MainContent/prodDetail.asp?prodID=244&productCat=Gameboy%20Advance) and you suddenly got a next gen hand held and 600 games if you know where to look, although I am sure you would rather write your own than illegally download ROMS.

And make sure you get one with a Afterburner (http://www.gamestyle.net/features.php?article=39) light fitted coz they are awful in poor light or house lights.

Buying a gameboy advance is a waste of money IMO. Unless you do traveling A LOT or enjoy play sub par hand held games its pointless.

I have a GBA and I don't think its that great to be honest. That dev kit thing is quite epensive too. I mean you could get a GF4 for all the cost of that. Much better.

The specs and buyers reviews can be seen from here (http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductsList.asp?Submit=Search&Category=15)

I copped out of splashing all 200 notes on a GF4Ti4600, but pretty sure I'll be getting a good card for the money and can expect approx 3-4 times the performance out of it over my GF2MX200.

Thanks for all the recommendations........just off to start a new thread called What should I buy with £80 I've got left over?

seems like a bargain you got there m8. let us know what it's like over your old card once you've installed it, will be interesting to find out.....

The price is on the link but £112 incl VAT. I'm hoping "maybe optimistically" its one of Gainwards Golden Sample cards

^SpOOk^ - I'm down to my last £80 and a cast-off GF2MX200 - how long will that get me :D

or maybe I'll have a go at overclocking my CPU :D

My XP1500+ (1333Mhz) runs at 46-48C at moment, but originally ran at 59-63C. I've since sorted out a case fan and remounted the Heatsink which took me 4 attempts to get right and almost resulted in a blown chip cos one time I forgot to re-attach the fans connector :flame:

This gives me an idea for a topic of conversation. new thread on subject created here (http://www.rtcw.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7027)

I'd personally invest in some decent Hi-Fi..

For £300 you could get yourself an Arcam Alpha7 CD player.. they've discontinued this range I think but you can still get it in decent hi-fi shops...

check it out??? (http://www.hifichoice.co.uk/archive/perl/294_printreview.htm)

or check some of the new gear??

Good British Hi-Fi (real Hi-fi that is) (http://www.arcam.co.uk)
