nice touch on the blue PCI slot...

I'm going for a KT4 for pure no frazzle and dazzle... just a very good motherboard... altho this board may find itself in my computer... Asus rules for sure...

Van do u know if the KT400 will take a Barton CPU...

Im more an Abit man myself. They say Gigabyte and Abit are supposed to be the leading 2 makes. Ive never heard anything bad about Asus though.

Very good mobo imo.

PS. Asus has been the worlds no1 or no2 mobo manufacturer for a long time. You don't get thet big without a reason ;)

Abit are amazing also...

of course we all know that ECS sells the most boards... but when it comes to top quality unbeatable mobos, it's easy to say that Abit and Asus take the lead... followed by cheaper yet very good mobos by Epox, MSI, Gigabyte and Soyo...

I read a preview (address below) about an Athlon XP Barton CPU and the reviewers were apparently using a KT333 DDR chipset, so I don't see why it shouldn't be able to take it.

I'm an ABIT fan, this motherboard seems to be top dog right now and only £150, I'm buying one on Monday!

Pentium 4 platform with Intel 845E chipset, 533MHz FSB, DDR266 and ABIT SoftMenu™ Technology
» 4 x PCI slots
» 1 x AGP (4x) slot
» 3 x 184pin DDR-SDRAM slots
» 2 x USB 2.0 devices on backplate (supplied)
» 6 x USB 2.0 devices onboard
» 2 x Firewire ports
» 6 channel AC3 / Dolby Digital sound onboard
» Optical SPDIF out (for digital Audio)
» 2 channel UDMA133 RAID (supporting upto 4 devices)
» 2 channel Serial ATA RAID (supporting upto 4 devices)
» 2 channel UDMA100 (supporting upto 4 devices)
» Serial ATA to IDE adapter (allows use of older drives on Serial ATA ports)

it uses the newer serial ATA150 (faster than UDMA133) for newer hard drives etc.

Great board but 2 problems.... Firstly you have to put an intel inside, and second its got on-board sound which should be avoided.:)

i've finally been pushed into the world of ddr(my trusty abit kt7a blew up:mad: ) and no one seems to do any decent sdram boards any more.
after a bit of research i went for the asus A7v333 and i must say it rock's.
so if you aint bothered about raid check this socket A board out it is tasty:love:

TomsHardware have done a good review of the latest KT400 motherboards, with Asus coming out on top.

BTW if your getting the KT400 board i'd get some DDR 333 memory for it because at the moment it actually out performs DDR 400

NigNog... I still think Intel rules... in the computing industry u usally get what u pay for... and altho Intel is expensive I personally have not had problems, nor any of my friends have problems with them... AMD on the other hand is the same story with a few overheats and then cracked chips from overheating... I guess they didn't pay for a good HSF so again u pay for what u get... :p

As far as I know the best Intel is fractionaly better than the best AMD but at what price? You pay a shit load more for the intel for a fraction more proformance. The AMD's do run hotter, so you just spend a few quid more on a decent heatsink. I have the XP1800+ and I spent £8.50 on the heatsink and It never goes above 50C even when rendering or gaming for an hour. Maybe If I had an extra 300 odd quid to spend on a processor I would get the intel but unfortunatly I don't. I dont do my food shopping at M&S either, I go to Tesco's for a similar reason. :)

Ive nothing against intel, I just don't like being ripped off, and paying for the name.

yes but AMD 2200+ is something like 1.9 / 2 ghz?

a P4 2ghz is about the same price (tho still a little bit higher :))

Not with the new thoroughbred core, its made with a lower micron process making it as cool as the Intel ones.

The AMD may be 1.9/2 ghz but due to its design its as good as a pentium 2.2ghz

the prices i showed were simply to highlight the not so big price difference between chips anymore, as far as spending my money is concerned when i upgraded i went for p4, slight price difference but much better for overclocking, i.e cpu @ 3 gig, running at 2.4 atm but it will run at 2.8 all day without any additional fans, i.e the stock cooler which is included with the p4 chip which i havent included in the price comparison ;)

tbh i have no brand loyalty between the two, at the time i upgraded intel was the better choice for me.

and i have to say the current machine has been so much stabler since i swapped over from the t-bird.

I've been trying to decide which motherboard to get for a couple of weeks now and that article has decided me - atm I've got an Abit KT7A and I haven't had too much trouble with it but it's an old one that doesn't support the new Athlons. Looks like I'll be getting myself an Asus :)

Now I just have to decide which DDR memory to get :/
...and whether or not I should wait for the new AthlonXP's to start appearing :\
...and where I can get a USB keyboard from :/

RAM: best choice is PC333.. Kingston maybe? or Crucial (http://www.crucial.com/uk/index.asp)
new CPU's: how long will that take?
USB keyboard: here? (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd3Byb2R1Y3Rfc2VhcmNocmVzdWx0cw%3D%3D)

I had no idea the price's were that close. Last time I looked there was about £150 - £200 differance. I stand corrected.

Tricky to find decent CL2 memory atm - overclock.co.uk sells some nice looking OCZ memory (http://www.overclock.co.uk/moreinfo.php?id=864) but that may be overkill since I probably wont overclock anything.
Ebuyer says their expecting new CPU's on 30th November which is probably longer than I can be bothered to wait for an extra couple of hundred MHz.

That link goes to a page full of AMD CPU's
I don't like the idea of having to pay for a keyboard when I'm used to "borrowing" nice new ones from work :) Maybe I'll just have to convince people at work to start buying USB keyboards instead.

Intel made a huge cut in prices when the 533fsb chips came out... they had to cuz AMD already did their cuts and was just offering the best bang for buck...

I realize that Intel is still far more expensive when it comes to the upper echelon of chips, but I pay for Intel based on stability and the fact that their chips do produce less heat on stock fans...

I have always been an Intel fan based on my own track record... I am the only one of all my friends who have stuck with Intel... everyone else jumped ship to AMD... now next week I'm jumping ship also just cuz like everyone has said, it's cheaper for the same or greater performance, and sometimes less...

Intel chipsets still rule... they will continue to make great chipsets for their chips while AMD has to rely on 3rd party, but it seems that Nvidia and AMD are getting a little kissy kissy... ...

Yeah i've been thinking about upgrading to, i was going to go for the MSI KT400 (lots of extras etc) before reading the review. I've seen that ASUS motherboard on Ebuyer for £88.95 inc VAT yet everywhere else its £100+ Pricing error or is there different versions of the same board?

Gummiez
16-10-2002, 05:46
there are probably 3 versions of this board...

1. Normal - no frills, just onboard audio
2. Lan - Normal + onboard ethernet (Gigabit Ethernet)
3. Total - Normal + Lan + Raid + Serial ATA + Firewire

could possibly be 4 or maybe they made it so that u can mix and match to ur needs... check that site again to make sure what u are getting...

I went to get a KT4 today... maybe I'll make the switch to the A7V8X and see what the cost is...

I went intel when I got my new system last year

I got a deal from dell (yes I know not the best make in the world)
They Offered me a
17" monitor (sony tube - flatscreen)
p4-1.8ghz
256mb SDRAM
Intel Mobo
SoundblasterLive Card
DVD player
CDRW
40GB ATA100 IBM HD
Modem
GF4mx

I had an AMD Duron System at the time complete with ATI Radeon 64 ddr - so I swaped the gfx cards over and off I went

My intel is amazing - I would never have bought the Dell were it not for the amazing price - £700 incl VAT

I am now looking to upgrade the duron system that I had - my plans are to go p4 2,53, MSI mobo, ATI 9700, 1gig DDRam, and simply switch bits across and put the new stuff in my black dell case.

I wouldn't touch AMD now. I like the processors but I would prefer the stability of an Intel chip
