Elections Set, Candidates Chosen!

The first elections since the ar of Communist Aggression have been set for January 10, 1946. With news of the elections the partys selected their candidates and the three front runners for the main partys are Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera for Partido Popular, Indalecio Prieto Tuerro for Partido Socialista Obrero Espanola, and Jose Giral Pereira for Union Republicana.

All three parties have started their campaigns in erenest and early polls show Primo de Rivera ahead followed closely by Giral and Tuerro in a further third. However it is a long time untill elections and the people can be swayed to any side. This election will be the second since the declaration of a republic and will be held on the tenth anniversary of the declaration of the republic.

In other news, the Cortes have sent a garrison of troops to to the Canarys. the first time since the uprising in 1913. the troops were accepted well by the population which voted to be part of the Spanish Republic in the aftermath of WWIII.

Gibraltar Trade Union

Jose Antonio Primo de River has announced today that he will begin negotiations with Morrocco, Portugal, and Andorra in the interests of a free trade pact and common market. he said that "This trade union will create stronger bonds between us and our close neighbors and will also create an economic boost for our nation." Many citizens have voiced their approval of such a pact and Primo de Rivera's poll ranking has gone up subsequently. This after a brief period of being lead by Giral who had three percent on him.

OOC: GB can I get some responses from these nations? Also, should LR want in then Im willing to do that but only for Gibraltar. Im also interested in reaquiring Gibraltar from the British.

Andorra is all for it. Portugal is somewhat interested (I have to do a little research and get back to you). Morocco is tentative, as they have an arrangement to that effect with the US and with Algeria. Its not a no, but figure negotiations and consultations will take most of the year of 1945.

OOC: Britain/Gibralter will stay out of this trade union, if only due to her recent isolationist views. Also Britain does not wish to lose Gibralter. It proved it's worth in the previous 2 wars as a vital defence point in the Med. The locals have also always been pro-British and unlikely to want to join Spain, it's always been the same and is true even in the present day. It will be even more so in E20 as Britain is funding level IV social services for all her subjects whether they are at home or abroad.

OOC: this is an interesting result. For Portugal, if it's still in the New State period like in RL then they'd prolly be for it just cus of their single party corparatism and the fact that I have conservatives in power. This whole Morrocco thing could end up becoming interesting if it goes how I think it will. Oh and just a question, is Morrocco a Kingdom?

OOC: Election results give a slight majority to the Republican Union and Jose Giral. This puts the PP in second and PSOE in third. Id also liek to find out what the deal is with my proposal to portugal and morrocco since andorra is all for it.

After considerable thought, both Portugal and the Kingdom of Morocco agree to a a trade agreement and elimination of trade barriers. Both however decide to keep their currencies. Portugal however wants Spanish support regarding the UN proposal on de colonization (its against it).

Spain will support Portugal in her foreign endeavors and is glad to see that the whole of Iberia and the Straight of Gibraltar are now united by economic ambition and political ideals. Perhaps this is the beginning of a new a bright age for all of the nations involved.

To: His Excellency Presidente Jose Giral Peirera of The Republic of Spain

The Portuguese New State, in light of an increasingly close relationship and an increasingly uncertain world, proposes that a Defensive Alliance be established between Portugal and Spain. The terms of the proposed alliance are as follows.

The Iberian Alliance

1. Portugal and Spain pledge to come to the assistance of the other in the event of attack by a Foreign Power.

2. Neither country will serve as a base for or assist in an attack upon the other by a third power.

3. Both Portugal and Spain pledge moral support for each others Foreign Initiatives and Endeavors.

Once this treaty is ratified the Portuguese New State requests Spain dispatch a mechanized division to the Portuguese Over Sea's Province of Mozambique to serve as a symbol of Spain and Portugal’s new alliance.

IC: After Intense deliberation and several closed meetings of the Cortes, the alliance has been approved and the news of the new alliance spread through diplomatic channels and Spain.

The Japanese ambassador approaches the Spanish Prime Minister to discuss bringing our two nations more closely together

OOC: Its president but w/e...also, what year is it and can you help me figure out my economy?

IC: Presidente Giral is interested and wishes for the Japanese ambassador to elaborate.

OOC: I think to make things easier just move your production centers to 20 or so, upgrade your units, and add some shipping units.

The Japanese ambassador would like to discuss possibly military exercises (landings, mountain warfare) and games between our two nations (like a mini-Olympics) to help train our athletes. Anything else the Spanish wish to discuss is fine too

The Kaiserlich Marine approaches the Spanish government with a proposal to purchase land near Palma for use as a German Naval Base. The Balearic Isles' relative inbetweenness to Germany and the Middle East makes it a perfect spot to host several ships that can more easily travel to any hot spot.
