Small Arms of the Imperial Layartebian Military

ADVERTISEMENT:
The Small Arms
of the
Imperial Layartebian Military

The Imperial Layartebian Military uses a vast number of small arms than range from the ancient M1911 .45ACP pistol to the new and advanced M8 LAR. However, the ILM also adopts its own weapons. Please note that these weapons are not for sale but this is done for commentary both positive and negative, critique, and discussion. Additionally, they are for declaration purposes so that in the event of a war that I am RP'ing, you can have some clue what is actually shooting at you.

M30 Assault Rifle

The M30 Assault Rifle is the standard issue rifle of all forces, replacing the M4 and M16A2. Both of these weapons were retired and are only in use by Special Forces or those who score expert marksmanship. Individuals who score expert marksmanship on their rifle training and those who are in Special Forces are allowed to carry whatever rifle they feel is their best weapon of use for both the situation and their own personal opinion. The M30 is available in two variants, one with a smaller barrel. The A1, equipped with an 11.50" barrel is for general purposes where fighting is under 500 meters. Accuracy is maintained out to 550 meters but effectively it is only meant to be used within 300 meters. Additionally, the 16.50" barrel of the A2 can be effective out to 550 meters. They have folding butt stocks and though they weigh in the 7 pound range, they distribute recoil effects evenly and allow for constant accuracy even in automatic fire. They use the standard NATO 5.56 x 45mm round. The A3 and A4 are lighter versions, using new production techniques. It lowers the weight of each rifle by 1 lb. and allows for a production cost of $1,100 for either the A3 Carbine or the A4 Rifle. The A5 Rifle is optimized for sniper duties and is called the Special Purpose Rifle. The A6 variant is a 16.00" barrel variant that utilizes the new 6.8 x 51mm standard round used by the ILM. It has an effective range of 600 meters and can mount all of the accessories that the other variants can mount and it is based off the M30A4 Assault Rifle. It is not in widespread service like the M80 or M81 but it is utilized by paratroopers and SOF.

M31 Heavy Machine Gun

The M31 is a heavy machine gun, meant to supplement the M2HB 12.7mm, made in the late 1930s. The M31 is 15.5mm and is vehicle mounted. It is not going to completely elminate the M2HB but rather on heavier armor and vehicles will be an option over the M2HB. It's superior range and power allow it to conduct both anti-surface and anti-air activities. The M31 is also unique in that it has a select fire mode with semi-auto, fully auto, and a five-round burst. This burst provides the most limited use of ammunition and the most deadly effects to be maintained. Against vehicles, 5 rounds is particularly deadly as well as against structures and other targets on the ground. The M31 also features a brass collection system. Empty shell casings ejected are returned to the box. A spring loading assembly pushes rounds back to make room for the shell casings, which are evenly stacked, providing a cost-effective alternative to the bullets. The M31A3 is a specially modified version for aircraft usage. The M31A4 HMG is a specially modified M31A2 with a higher rate of fire for aircraft use.

M33 Pistol

The M33 is the new standard pistol. Until now, the military has been using several pistols. Special Forces alone use some two dozen pistol types. The M9 Beretta 92F, the M1911 Colt .45, the H&K USP, and the Mk.23 SOCOM are the most popular of course. In standard infantry usage, only the M33 will be issued. Those who naturally score expert marksmanship and are in the Special Forces are allowed to carry whatever pistol they so choose. It comes in .45ACP like the Mk.23 and the 1911 and also in .40 S&W, to provide better power and accuracy than the 9 x 19mm of the Beretta 92F. The M33 is actually a modified USP Match. The A3/A4 come with an option for 3-round burst and also for an extended clip which increases magazine sizes by three times. The A5 features a .357SIG round, seen in the SIG Sauer P229 and the A6 features the 5.7 x 28mm rifle round seen in the P90 submachine gun and the Five-seveN pistol. The A7 features the powerful 10mm Auto bullet. Both upgrades allow for soldiers to maintain the degree of quality of the M33 and use additional rounds.

I assume the M30 muzzle velocity is for the A2. What is it for the A1? I ask, because guns like the M4a1, and ones with even shorter barrels than 14.5in(as in your 11.5in) have lower velocities. This means the bullets only retains lethality to a short range. I wonder how you can over-come slow muzzle velocity without increasing the barrel size?

For a short article on what I mean...

"There have been several reports from troops in Afghanistan regarding the lack of lethality of the SS109/M855 cartridge, particularly when it is fired from an M4 (US) or M8 (Canadian) carbine. This was also observed in Somalia. For the SS109/M855 to achieve lethality, it must be moving at a velocity of over 732m/s when it strikes its target. At this velocity and above, the bullet penetrates a short distance and then begins to yaw as its spinning slows and it tends to return to normal stable state, which is base forward. As the bullet yaws, it comes apart at the cannelure, scattering fragments and causing a relatively large wound channel. In practical terms, this translates to approximately 200m with a bullet fired from an M16 or similar rifle with a 558mm barrel at approximately 914m/s.

When fired from a carbine, however, the SS109/M855 bullet leaves the barrel with a velocity of only about 790m/s. Therefore by the time it has traveled downrange only 50m it has already dropped below the velocity threshold for enhanced wound ballistics. The net effect is that troops equipped with M4 or M8 carbines are using weapons that are only marginally more effective ballistically than a 0.22 Magnum at anything other an close-quarters battle distances.

The lack of wounding efficacy has caused some military elements to begin exploring the possibility of adopting a 5.56x45mm cartridge with an improved bullet or even a different caliber altogether with improved wound ballistics. Most of these efforts, now only in the earliest stages, have experimented with heavier bullets. For example, US special operations forces in Afghanistan now employ a match cartridge manufactured by US company Black Hills Ammunition that fires a 5g bullet at 792m/s in the M4 Carbine. This cartridge has proven to have improved terminal ballistics over the SS109/M855. Other experiments have been conducted with bullets weighting as much as 6.5g. Some have proposed adopting an entirely new caliber, but this is unlikely in the immediate futures."

Good point, I didn't think of that. I'll have to edit that.

EDIT: 3,020 fps [A1]; 3,250 fps [A2]

Still, I dont understand how this A1, with an 11.5in barrel can maintain a higher fps than the M-16a2, much less the M4a1.

M16A2 has a 3,250 fps with 20". So you should ask how the A2 has a MV equal to that of the M16A2. Simple answer. Hotter load.

M34 SLATDW

The M34 is a unit replacement for the M136 AT4. The flaw of the AT4, for the ILM was its bulky size. The previous M72 LAW was most compact and significantly easier to employ. The Layarteb Defense Corporation has engineered an advanced LAW using gel fuel. The 78mm round is slightly heavier than the M72 but packs significantly more punch, having a top speed of some 2,500 feet per second, in comparison to the 950 of the AT4 and the 475 of the LAW. The M34 uses a pop-out launcher with iron sights and is fired from the shoulder. SLATDW stands for shoulder-launched, anti-tank, disposable weapon. It is pronounced SLATDOW.

Status: In-service [A1]
Caliber: 78mm
Launcher Length: 24.80" [closed]; 34.67" [open]
Launcher Weight: 2.20 lb. [empty]; 7.50 lb. [complete]

Rocket Weight: 5.30 lb.
Minimum Range: 10 meters
Maximum Range: 2,500 meters
Effective Range: 350 meters [moving target]; 450 meters [stationary target]
Muzzle Velocity: 762 meters per second
Penetration: 800mm of rolled homogenous armor
Cost: $1,500
Service Life: 1 round, disposable launcher

M35 Light Machine Gun

The M35 is the newest light machine gun of the ILM. It is designed to replace the M240 and M60E3 on vehicles and in infantry as a 7.62 x 51mm cartridge. It will complement the 5.56 x 45mm M249 SAW and allow for extreme suppressive firepower on enemy positions with phenominal accuracy and little weight. The M35 allows for a high rate of fire with little wear and tear to the barrel. The light weight of the M35 allows it to be carried easily with a significant amount of ammunition. Like the M31, it incorporates a 5-round burst selector, semi-automatic fire, and fully automatic fire. The M35A2 incorporates the 5.56 x 45mm round seen in assault rifles. The M35A3 incorporates the 6.8 x 51mm LDC round.
